Roderick Green is #9 in a West Monroe,
Lousiana family of 11 siblings. But
when it comes to sprinting, he's
far more likely to be at the head
of the pack.
The 21-year-old senior who attends
Oklahoma Christian University on
a basketball scholorship only recently
started competing in disability sports.
A congenital right, below knee amputee,
Roderick is missing his fibula and
ankle, a condition which never prevented
his playing against able bodied opponents
on a basketball court. He wears a
Springlite foot in competition.
In 1998, he met track athlete and
Texas Christian University student
Jake Repp, also a below knee amputee,
when both were having prosthetic
work done. The encounter led to some
friendly basketball. "Jake said
if I'd come out and run track, he'd
play basketball. I did and we've
been friends ever since. He's a nice
really cool person," Roderick
commented. One of Rodericks first
track events was the National Outdoor
Championships for the able-bodied,
held in summer 1999, in Eugene Oregon.
Roderick finished fifth overall.
He followed that with a 4th in both
the 100m and 200m in the '99 ISOD
World Championships in Barcelona.
Prior to the Sydney track and field
qualifying events in late June, he
was entered in the Dallas Gold Track
Meet, running against able-bodied
athletes in the 100 and 200m sprints.
After college graduation, Roderick
plans on obtaining a master's degree
in physical education and becoming
a college coach.
